DICOM
summary

Industry standard for transferring and retrieving diagnostic medical images (X-rays, MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, ultrasound) and information between electronic devices.

DICOM version 1.0 was published by ACR-NEMA in 1985, followed by v2.0 in 1988 and v3.0 was released in 1993. The current version of DICOM is the 2004 Base Standard.

sponsor organisation The American College of Radiology (ACR) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) in liaison with other Standardization Organizations including CEN TC251 in Europe and JIRA in Japan and other organizations such as IEEE, HL7 and ANSI.
adoption date USA: March 21 2003, by all Federal agencies (announcement by the US Departments of Health and Human Services, Defense, and Veterans Affairs).
