At registration,
the front desk personnel wirelessly notify the nurse that a patient has
arrived and transmit demographic information necessary for triggering certain
decision support. The nurse takes vital signs, including the “fifth vital
sign” (”Are you a smoker?”) and transmits this information to the physician
wirelessly. The physician’s system is used to gather additional relevant
inforamtion and combine it with information transmitted by the registrar and
nurse to arrive at recommendations to support smoking cessation, including
appropriate pharmacologic choices and support systems.
