| description |
Caisis is an open source web application designed to bridge the gap between Clinical Research and Clinical Practice.
The application was originally designed to track data for Urologic cancer, but now has
expanded to track other cancers. The Caisis project was initiated with the goal of improving data quality and accuracy while
reducing time and effort for clinicians and support staff. The Caisis team has openly
embraced the open source model. As such, the application and all of its source code is freely available for download
under the General Public License (GPL), an open source license approved by the Open Source Initiative.
In most instances, Caisis is currently being used to help manage patient
data.
For example, Caisis is in use at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York,
to support clinical practice and documentation
for every patient who comes through the Urology and Genitourinary Medicine
clinics. There are about 45,000 patients currently in the database here. The system is
also used to help follow these patients longitudinally to determine their long-term
outcomes.
The New York Prostate Institute is the first
group to take Caisis in a new and different direction in their
Haliard project. The Haliard project expands on the functionality of Caisis by
incorporating features that are unique to Radiation Oncology, including
brachytherapy seed inventory and management module. While Haliard
expands on the feature set in Caisis, it was progressed in less time and
with less effort because the base fields, features, and functions were
already available through the Caisis source code.
The goal of CAISIS is the development of an open source system that
integrates research and clinical practice. Current work is focusing on the development
of electronic forms ("eForms") for
physicians
