The document "is intended to guide the treatment of tuberculosis in settings where mycobacterial cultures, drug susceptibility testing, radiographic facilities, and second-line drugs are routinely available. ... It provides guidance on:

  1. organization and supervision of treatment, including the role of the health department;
  2. first-line and second-line drugs in current use;
  3. principles of antituberculosis chemotherapy;
  4. recommended treatment regimens and practical aspects of treatment;
  5. drug interactions;
  6. treatment in special situations, including HIV infection, infection in children and adolescents, extrapulmonary TB, and pregnancy and breastfeeding;
  7. management of relapse, treatment failure, and drug resistance, including the role of surgery in multidrug-resistant TB;
  8. World Health Organization and International Union Against Tuberculosis recommendations for treatment of TB in low-income countries;
  9. research priorities for TB treatment, including new antituberculosis drugs and other interventions to improve treatment efficacy. "
