The expert system entered routine use since 1989. It provides an automated second surgical opinion for areas where surgery is often overprescribed. That automated second surgical opinion is send to a second opinion physician, who can review both attending physician and expert system-based comments to adjudicate several opinions and make the clinically best decision. The system has had a major impact on reducing the incidence of unnecessary surgery, and is helping its user to provide more consistent and higher quality care in its managed care networks.
